Should I take the new August SAT Test? Do you offer summer classes or tutoring?

The College Board announced that the new SAT 2017-8 Test Dates would include a test in August 2017. Many students have questioned why the Board does not offer a test during the summer and finally, the date has arrived. But is taking the SAT at the end of a long, hot summer the best idea for most students? The answer is yes, but the student must be willing to put in the effort. Many of our students work summer jobs such as lifeguards and camp counselors, which prove to be exhausting, long days in the sun and heat. One of our students arrived at class last summer totally sunburned and miserable. This condition definably did not contribute to his success in class. So how should a student approach preparing in the summer? Here are a few time tested study tips:

Make a Written Plan

Research has proved that written plans are far more successful than just guessing what you want to accomplish each day. This plan should involve timed and untimed partial exams as well as addressing the areas that are most challenging for each student. These plans are individualized, and OnPoint Prep can help develop a successful plan for any student.

Select the Correct Study Time

Many students are actually more timed crunched in the summer than during the school year. This may seem improbable, but jobs, sports camps and even fun get in the way of preparing for the SAT. Are you a morning or night person? Can you study before work or camp? Make a plan and stick with it for study times, but one word of advice. Please do not schedule to study during your lunch break at work or camp. We have watched numerous students over the years attempt this great feat, but the vast majority are unsuccessful. Please read and follow the next steps if you would like to attempt this study time.

Study Outdoors

Nothing is more frustrating than sitting indoors on a beautiful summer day. Plain and simple, work outdoors and find a quiet place with plenty of shade to study. Your backyard or a park is a great location. Our advice would be to avoid the outdoor tables at your local coffee house or café. The activity is far too distracting and it is important to remember you are supposed to be studying for your SAT.

Try the Air Conditioned Library

Many homes are very hot and just plain uncomfortable during the summer. Why not try the Library? Most libraries are air-conditioned and provide great quiet places to study for the SAT. Many facilities also allow food and drinks, but please check your local library’s rules.

Take Time Off

Everyone needs a break. The next time you have a few hours to yourself, don’t waste them inside sitting around on your phone or watching Netflix. Instead, do an activity you enjoy and have fun. Summer is often over before we know it, so be sure to make the most of every bit of your downtime.
